Checklist guidelines


Checklist definition: it is a kind of template that helps people to focus on actions or items that they need to complete or acquire in order of reaching certain objective(s). The main checklist purpose is representing some process or project as a sequence of step-by-step actions (successive action plan), so that it becomes easy to follow through them. The checklist usage is a widespread practice in all possible industries where some typical business or technical processes are applied. The point of method is to reach a better planning and controllability of such typical processes, as using checklists leads to economizing doer’s business time, helping him to better focus on certain priorities, and allows him to control his own performance in a strict and clear manner (by checking-off done things from the checklist and moving to the next steps). When composing a checklist you need to follow some essential checklist guidelines:

  • If it is an action plan, then it should be comprised of only clear and doable items;
  • If some checklist items cannot be explained with a one brief message, then consider how to break them-down for smaller parts;
  • Categorize checklist items to reach their better grouping into different sections;
  • Don’t overloaded the main checklist with text, but record all additional instructions and notes in a space below;
