The definition: it is a structural representation of interrelated work elements (activities, operations, action items, goals, etc) that form up a “task hierarchy chart” – a map of working steps leading from the starting point of a task (initiation) to its finishing point (getting the task’s results). Task hierarchy in project can be called WBS or “task tree” where the whole scope of work is clearly expounded and represented in a way explaining the project as a really consistent and integral picture of activities to complete. The methods to compose effective job hierarchy (project’s WBS or a break-down decomposition of a sole task) is a particular science that needs a complex view and expertise from a doer (you can learn these methods at special PM courses, as well as from different articles, including wiki references), but when you need to create a practical workforce sample you may use special software such as one represented below:
