Classification and management of business targets

To ensure consistency of goal-setting in business, objectives are classified according to their main qualities. Business targets can be classified by terms of attainment - short-term objectives (with high level of specification and big amount of details), long-term objectives and medium-term objectives which connects short- and long-term objectives.
Another manner is to classify objectives by fields of company's activities:
Market targets - examples:

1. To increase sales volumes in money and real expression
2. To increase number of clients and market share

Production targets - usually are the consequence of the market targets. Include everything that is necessary for achievement of the market targets (except for organizational resources). Examples:

1. To provide a certain volume of production
2. To build a new workshop
3. To upgrade new, more productive technologies

Organizational targets - everything that concerns company management, company structure and personnel management. Examples:

1. To hire new employees of certain qualification
2. To increase employees' salary to the level of branch leaders
3. To implement software system for project and personnel management

Financial targets - cost expression of all previous targets. Examples:

1. To decrease production costs
2. To increase profitability of sales
3. To increase gross profit and net profit

In any large organization which has various structural divisions and several levels of management, there is hierarchy of targets representing decomposition of the targets of higher level into targets of lower level. The higher level of target the more common is definition of target and the longer is period of achievement. The targets of lower levels work as instruments for achievement of the targets of higher level. In other words short-term objectives are deduced from long-term objectives, subordinated to them and represent more specific and detailed ways of result achievement. Short-term objectives establish milestones on the way of achievement of long-term objectives.
