Phases of test management

Maintaining and controlling a product quality is the ultimate goal of any company, especially software development company, which intends to satisfy customer needs and win a victory over rivals. Test management is the way to control a product quality and make product development smoother and more efficient. Companies organise Test Departments and Quality Assurance Departments trying to reduce defects, track metrics, collaborate with team and avoid mistakes within the development process. Test management can be broken into several phases, such as follows:

  • Resource organization is a necessary part of test management. It requires organizing and maintaining a set of test items. The team leader organises a group of testers and establishes dependencies and relationships among test assets.
  • Test planning is phase that addresses the questions of why, what, when, and where to test. A test motivator puts forward an idea or a reason for test. What should be tested is divided into many test cases for the project. When to test is defined by tracking cycles or time periods to the testing. Where to test is determined by needed environment and conditions.
Phases of test management
  • Test authoring is a process where abstract test cases are developed into more specific test steps required to complete a given test.
  • Test execution assumes creation and assignment of a set of tasks and to-do lists to testers. This phase is aimed to answer the question of how the testing will be conducted.
  • Test reporting implies communicating and analyzing of the testing efforts. This phase helps to determine the current status of the project, as well as the overall quality level of a product.

The testing efforts will generate a lot of information. From this information, metrics can be set, and the team leader can measure and track quality goals for the project. Then, the quality metrics will be used for identifying the project success or failure
