Performance management for a team is the concept of arranging the composition, direction or context of a work group with the purpose to increase the effectiveness of this group. Team performance management orientates the team members on positive outcomes and the achievement of the team's key business goals. It is a bridge over the gap between the established goals of the team and performance results.

The effective performance management for a team is predicated upon the following thee principles :

  1. Determining team behaviours. In most methodologies of team building there are some methods to establish a team-work, but these methods usually describes what an individual member should do within the team, but not what all the team members should do collectively. It means that while all the members in the team can behave in trustworthy manner, this does not ensure that the team will build trust together, because this also depends on other factors, such as working environment or processes the team use for communicating, making decisions, rewarding, etc.
  2. Each successful team has specific behaviours that vary. It means that the profile of behaviours that makes a construction team successful can be quite different from another profile that makes an advertising campaign team successful. Behaviours vary from team to team.
  3. Team behaviour profile can be altered by using team performance management. Performance management for a team involves definition of behavioural goals and measurement of current behaviours in order to detect the gap between the current and desired profile of the team behaviours, and then to plan, implement and track changes with purpose to close that gap. There are significant similarities between performance management for individuals and team.
The effective practice of team performance management should be based on these three principles. To achive these principles, the methodology of team performance supposes some actions the managers and the staff should do. First of all, the managers establishes behavioural goals and develop "questionnaire for an ideal team profile". This questionnaire can be used by managers, staff and customers to identify what set of behaviours can bring the team to success. Then the managers analyze the gap to compare current and desired behaviours. Depending on the results of the gap analysis, the managers get clear insight of how to close the gap. By making current behaviours closer to the behavioural profile required for success, performance of the team will be improved.
