Scrum is one of the most popular methodologies of flexible development. One of the reasons of its popularity is its simplicity. Methodology Scrum establishes rules of the project processing and allows to apply already existing practices of coding. Usage of this methodology gives a chance to reveal and eliminate deviations from desirable result at earlier development cycles of software product.

In Scrum methodology there are three roles:

  • Scrum Master
  • Product Owner
  • Team

Scrum Master

Scrum Master is the most important role in the methodology. Scrum Master is responsible for success of Scrum in the project. As a matter of fact, Scrum Master is the interface between management and team of the project. As a rule, this role in the project is occupied by the project manager or team leader. It is important to underline that Scrum Master does not allocate tasks to members of team.

The basic duties of Scrum Master are:

  • Creating trust atmosphere
  • Participating in meetings as a facilitator
  • Eliminating obstacles
  • Revealing issues and question
  • Maintaining practices and processes in team

Scrum Master conducts Daily Scrum Meeting and traces progress of the project team by means of Sprint Backlog. He can also assist Product Owner in creating Backlog for the team.

Product Owner

Product Owner is the person who is responsible for working out of a product. As a rule, this is the manager of the project for internal development and the representative of the customer. Product Owner is a uniform point of acceptance of final decisions for the team in the project. For this reason it is always a single person, instead of group or committee.

The basic duties of Product Owner are:

  • Formatting of product vision
  • Operating return on investment(ROI)
  • Operating expectations of customers and all interested persons
  • Coordinating and prioritizing Product backlog
  • Providing clear and understandable requirements to the team
  • Cooperating with both the team and the customers

Product Owner sets tasks but he has no rights to pose tasks to particular member of the team for one sprint (sprint is an iteration (repetition) with duration of 30 days).

Team

In Scrum methodology the team is self-organizing and self-manageable. Team assumes obligations to perform a list of tasks for a single sprint. Team work is estimated as work of uniform group. In Scrum the contribution of separate members of the project team is not to be assessed as it disorganizes self-coordinated team.

The basic duties of Team are:

  • Estimating elements of Backlog
  • Decision making on design and implementation
  • Developing a software and giving it to the customer
  • Tracking own progress (together with Scrum Master)
  • Responsible for results presented to Product Owner

The size of the team is limited to the size of group of the people capable effectively to cooperate face to face. Typical team size is seven persons, give or take two.

VIP Task Manager is easy management software that combines personal time management, team collaboration and communication tools, reliable notification system and simple project tracking. This software can be applied to manage Scrum project and create role for each participator. In Resource List of VIP Task Manager you can create three roles: Scrum Master, Product Owner and Team. Each of these roles will have personal permission level to the project task groups and tasks.

Permissions can be applied in Permission panel. In Task Tree View you can build hierarchical structure of the project and set permissions for task group. For example, the role "Team" can have task group with tasks and team can assign tasks to particular members of the team. Product Owner will have access to that task group and Product Owner will create tasks in it. As to Scrum Master he will be able only to watch the tasks but not to change them and get notifications on all task changes.
