All tasks of project manager can be divided into the following groups:

  • Launching new project
  • Creation of product development plan
  • Beginning and completing of iterations
  • Project monitoring

Launching new project

Being based on the initial document of the system concept, the project manager works out initial economic substantiation of the project, its borders, risks and potential profits. The system concept reflects true sense of requirements: what exactly you wish to achieve. In the economic substantiation there are basic reasons of the project implementation. Before the project is initiated and approved, the system concept and the economic substantiation of the project should be reconsidered many times. It is necessary to begin identification of risks as soon as possible, i.e. of any events which can negatively affect the project or, in general, lead to impossibility of its accomplishment. These risks are the outstanding questions that should be solved in the following iteration of the project.

Creation of product development plan

Depending on functional borders and size of the project, the project manager will involve some or all resources for product development plan. There are two important sections of product development plan: planning time and resources, and specifying the process which the project will be involved in.

Beginning and completing of iterations

Having specified criteria of success for each iteration, the project manager will carry out more detailed planning of volumes and purposes of iterations. These tasks will demand the expanded interaction with all participants of the project group. Each iteration will demand corresponding staffing with subsequent assignment of tasks to participants of the project group.

After iteration is ended the project manager will get access to results of the iteration and compare them to the expected results listed in the product plan. Divergences will lead to revision of the plan or to definition of new functional borders of the project. So the process of iteration can be improved. For example, at the review of preliminary identified risks, you have come to a conclusion that you really successfully integrated technology into a prototype and have test ed it, and so the risk was eliminated.

Project monitoring

The project manager will use some indicators for tracking performance of the project and compare them to planned values. It can be applied at various levels of formality and use a combination of metrics (such as detection of defects and percent of their elimination) and reviews (informal and formal) for an estimation of observance of plans and achievement of quality of the product. For example, if frequency of detection of bugs considerably falls, it may be a signal of the following:

  • works on testing are conducted inefficiently
  • new builds of the system do not introduce any essential functionality
  • product becomes stable.
