Project management plan



 
 

Project management plan is the primary source of information on the project and project activities. It is a formal document that specifies how the project will be planned, performed, tracked, controlled, and closed. It is developed under supervision and control of project manager during execution and implementation of planning processes. Project team is responsible for developing the plan while project manager takes responsibility for administering and supervising planning activities. PM software is usually used to develop, follow and control the plan.

The plan is an output of project planning processes that have an emphasis on determining and managing project scope, costs, quality, procurement, human resources, communications, risks and other components of project management plan structure. Such processes can be characterized by the following:

  • Preparing is the first planning process that involves project initiating activities to prepare a draft of project management plan. Project manager takes ultimate responsibility for collecting and investigating all necessary information on the future project and project activities. At the end of the process, project manager should create an outline to be presented to project stakeholders.
  • Developing is a process of determining and documenting all necessary actions to prepare, integrate, and manage all subsidiary plans, such as communications plan, risk plan, etc. To develop a example , you will need to work with your project team and use such documents as Project Charter, Project Scope Statement, and Business Case Study.
  • Following is a process of implementing and completing the work items defined in the plan to meet project requirements and specifications. As a project manager, you need to coordinate and direct activities and tasks of your team which executes the work specified in your job outline.
  • Tracking and controlling is a process of monitoring status and progress of the plan execution. You should note that this process involves controlling changes, monitoring ongoing activities, comparing current project progress with expectations specified in your schedule , and influencing factors that may cause negative consequences for your project.
  • Reporting is a process of finalizing all activities outlined in the plan to formally close the project. While carrying out this process, you need to review all completed and pending tasks and then verify completed ones while pending tasks will be investigated in detail, and recommendations for completing these tasks will be given. The manager needs to prepare a report and submit it to stakeholders.
