Sometimes employee is not able to execute delegated task self-dependently or in time (because of the lack of experience, not sufficient skills or any other problems), in this case supervisor may carry out part of delegated task in order to help employee with task competition, but this should not be backward delegation. To help employee correctly supervisor can:

  • analyze the problem and decide if task can be done at all;
  • carry out only selected steps (parts) of problematic task to decrease workload on subordinate;
  • engage additional resources if possible (allocate parts of task among different executers);
  • create action plan for elimination of problems that may appear;

Only extreme situations require backward delegation (when supervisor executes main part of problematic task).
